Insyde Software Eliminates Flash ROM Size Limitations for Pre-boot Software

New Technology Allows Pre-boot Software to be Stored Securely in Multiple Locations Without Needing Hidden Partition

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 1, 2005 - Insyde Software, a leading provider of system software, BIOS, and engineering services, today introduced "Secure ROM Sizing" technology that will be integrated into the company's suite of InsydeH2O BIOS Replacement solutions. This new capability allows PC makers to add a wide range of essential firmware and/or value-added utilities and applications into the pre-boot environment, without having to use larger and more costly flash ROM parts. Unlike other solutions, the Secure ROM Sizing technology doesn't require PC makers to use a hidden partition to store this software.

PC makers want to provide pre-boot software to their customers such as system recovery and improved manageability solutions. However, that software needs to be stored somewhere on the PC, and in today's competitive PC market environment it is difficult for them to add the cost of larger Flash ROM parts to accommodate this pre-boot software.

"Insyde Software's virtual ROM technology addresses a critical problem for cost sensitive PC makers," said Greg Miller, Sr. Manager SW Development Operation, Intel Desktop Boards. "This will help enable customers using the Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI to control the amount of Flash ROM storage they build into their products while still providing a wide range of valuable pre-boot software with their PC platform."

InsydeH2O with Secure ROM Sizing technology creates a "virtual" Flash ROM that is almost unlimited in size. The "virtual" Flash ROM storage can exist on the main system partition of the hard disk drive, on a network, or on a server across the Internet.

Using Secure ROM Sizing from Insyde Software, pre-boot software can be loaded as securely as if it was loaded from the physical Flash ROM. Firmware components, utilities and applications that are stored in the "virtual" ROM are given a unique identifier and by leveraging industry-standard security methods, the physical Flash ROM authenticates and permits approved software to run.

In the past, other vendors' solutions have required special, hidden partitions on the hard disk drive to store this type of preboot software. But hidden partitions have certain undesirable side effects, such as complicating the manufacturing process. Further, with a portion of the disk drive hidden from the Windows operating system, customers may complain believing that they received a smaller disk drive than purchased.

On Tuesday, March 1st, at the Intel Developer Forum Insyde Software's technical staff will present a session track entitled, "Securing Pre-Boot Applications in the Framework." Insyde Software will also be exhibiting Secure ROM Sizing and other technologies running with its latest InsydeH2O products on desktop, mobile and embedded platforms.
