Insyde Software Enables New Class of Notebook PCs

New InsydeAxS™ Works with Next-Generation Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology to Enable New Usage Model for "Office Warrior" Notebook PC Users

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., February 18, 2004 (Booth # 745) - Insyde Software, a leading global provider of system software, BIOS, and engineering services, today announced InsydeAxS™. This product will allow notebook PC makers to offer closed-lid instant access to email, appointments, contacts and other information through a secondary display integrated into the outside lid of next-generation notebook PCs based on Intel® Centrino mobile technology (code-named "Sonoma"). InsydeAxS will enable a new class of notebook PCs with the fundamental feature of allowing users, especially those in motion in the enterprise, to have convenient, instant access to critical data over a wireless LAN connection, while their notebook is closed. Intel describes this usage model as Extended Mobile Access, or EMA.

InsydeAxS will be demonstrated by representatives of Insyde Software and Intel at this week's Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. The product is unique in that it communicates with Intel Centrino mobile technology components to enter a reduced power state when the lid is closed, while remaining continuously connected to the wireless network within the enterprise. Users, therefore, don't have to keep their system in a fully powered-up mode to get this information thus enabling extended battery life. Critical alerts, email, calendar and other information can be constantly synchronized with such applications as Microsoft Outlook and Exchange Server.

"InsydeAxS will enable mobile PC users to stay connected and access information when it isn't convenient or appropriate to open their notebook PCs," said Anand Chandrasekher, Intel vice president and co-general manager of Intel's Mobile Platforms Group. "We expect this new EMA usage model to help make next generation Intel Centrino mobile technology based systems even more valuable to enterprise notebook PC users who move from place to place in the office environment."

InsydeAxS, which is expected to appear in notebook PCs later this year, will provide OEM and ODM computer makers the following key features and benefits:

  • Supports a new usage model for "office warrior" notebook PC users
  • Provides rich opportunity for notebook PC product differentiation
  • Application and driver software enables closed-lid access via an EMA Lid Display to view synchronized email, tasks, contacts, calendar, alerts and system status when connected to a wireless network.
  • Enables reduced power consumption with lid closed, thereby enabling longer battery life.

"As the leading provider of personal computers in China, the Legend Group always strives to bring more value to our customers. InsydeAxS provides us with an excellent opportunity to do this," said Thomas Shu, Technical Director of PCBA and Notebook Design Center at the Legend Group. "InsydeAxS is a new productivity tool as well as a means to increasing the effective battery life of our notebook computers."

"In today's corporate environment, 60 percent of information workers move from location to location. These workers could be more productive if they had access to basic information such as e-mail, contacts and meeting schedules while attending meetings on premises," said Steve Kleynhans, vice president of META Group's technology research services. "After many years of notebook computer usage, EMA technology would deliver on this promise."

"Not only do we believe that InsydeAxS provides a significant, new capability for the notebook PC end user," said C.T. Wang, president of Insyde Software, "but it creates opportunity for PC makers as well, by giving them a new palette to offer a broad range of product differentiation for this newly created segment."
