Insyde Software Announces Fundamental Change in BIOS Technology

New InsydeH2O™ delivers a Common Code Base that Lowers System Development Costs

INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, SAN JOSE, Calif., September 17, 2003 - Insyde Software, a leading global provider of BIOS, firmware and software services, today announced its next generation PC firmware technology and a product line aimed at replacing the traditional PC BIOS (Basic Input Output System) that has been used on almost every mobile, desktop, server and embedded Intel Architecture based personal computer built in the last twenty years.

Using twenty-first century software engineering techniques and tools, Insyde's driver model based software significantly eases the difficulties which PC designers have in adapting and advancing their platform level firmware. Further, because the software is written in the "C" language, PC makers will have a wider pool of software engineers to draw upon. In the past, BIOS software was written in assembly language, which inhibited productivity.

Based on the Extensible Firmware Interface this new product line from Insyde debuts under the brand name, "InsydeH2O™," representing the next generation "Hardware-2-Operating System" firmware interface. InsydeH2O is aimed across a range of market segments including Desktop, Mobile, Server and Embedded computing. InsydeH2O provides ODM and OEM computer makers the following key benefits:

  • Faster time to market for new hardware platforms.
  • Compatible firmware and development environment across an OEM's entire product line.
  • Streamlined method for testing and qualifying PCs in manufacturing line.
  • Greater productivity and lower costs to developing and maintaining firmware technology.

"We're excited about Insyde's new product based on the Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI and look forward to its appearance in the first Framework-based systems this year," said Will Swope, Vice President and General Manager of Intel's Software and Solutions Group. "InsydeH2O will allow OEMs to build innovation through firmware into their new designs."

As an implementation of the "Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI," InsydeH2O is being showcased for the first time at this IDF event in San Jose on mobile, desktop and server PCs. The technology is being publicized and supported through product demonstrations at the event from Insyde Software's customers and leading worldwide ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) including Compal Electronics, Inventec Corporation and Quanta Computer. Also, Insyde Software will join representatives of Intel Corporation on Thursday, September 18th in delivering a technical presentation entitled "Non-Intel Silicon Support within the Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI."

The InsydeH2O product family has been developed over the past several years. It draws its fundamental technical foundation from the EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) specification. Building upon this specification, Insyde Software is developing a series of pre-boot applications that utilize this robust technology.

"Our new technology represents the first significant change in BIOS architecture and development methodologies in over 20 years," said C.T. Wang, President of Insyde Software in Taiwan. "With InsydeH2O not only do we substantially increase the efficiency of BIOS development but we also dramatically increased the size of our target markets. We are very appreciative of the support and guidance we received from Intel Corporation in helping to bring our support of the Intel Platform Innovation Framework for EFI and InsydeH2O to market."

About InsydeH2O
