SystemSoft Extends Support For Managing Notebook PCs

SystemSoft and Xircom Showcase Mobile Pre-Boot Technology In Support of Intel's Wired for Management Initiative Subheading

NATICK, Mass. - August 3, 1998 - SystemSoft Corp., (NASDAQ: SYSF), a leading global provider of enabling software technologies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), today extended its support for the Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) Wired for Management (WfM) specification by teaming with Xircom, Inc. (NASDAQ: XIRC) to illustrate the benefits to IT managers of pre-boot technology for notebook computers. At the WfM Summit Showcase and the Enterprise Management Conference this week in Santa Clara, Calif., demonstrations based on SystemSoft's mobile PXE BIOS firmware and Xircom's network PC Cards will illustrate how IT managers can simplify the process of maintaining fleets of notebook computers.

SystemSoft provides this critical WfM technology with its mobile BIOS and as a BIOS-independent firmware module. SystemSoft continues to play a leading role in enabling mobile pre-boot technology, including having made special contributions to the mobile PXE specification. In addition, SystemSoft has provided the industry's only public demonstrations of mobile PXE firmware technology. At PC Expo in June, SystemSoft and 3Com Corporation provided the industry's first demonstration of a mobile pre-execution boot environment.

"SystemSoft again has taken a leadership role in making notebooks easier to manage," said Stephen J. Gentile, vice president of marketing for SystemSoft's Platform Products Group. "Having provided key contributions to the WfM specification, SystemSoft is pleased to collaborate with Xircom to help make mobile pre-boot technology a reality."

"SystemSoft is an important partner for Xircom because of its active role in driving enabling firmware manageability technology," said Renee Bader, Xircom's vice president of worldwide marketing. "Together, Xircom and SystemSoft will make notebook computers as easy to support as their desktop counterparts."

According to the Gartner Group, network administration costs are up to 60 percent higher for notebook computers than desktop computers (Gartner Group, 1998). Pre-boot technology will play a critical role in helping system administrators significantly lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) associated with notebook computers.

SystemSoft's mobile PXE BIOS firmware provides Pre-Boot dynamic detection and configuration of the notebook's PC Card controller and PC Card then initiates the network boot sequence. SystemSoft's mobile PXE BIOS firmware is BIOS-vendor independent, supports the WfM specification and will be available to notebook PC OEMs during the third quarter of 1998.
