SystemSoft Unveils Industry's First Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Technology Enabling Program
Editorial Summary:
- Continues ACPI Specification Support; Extends Power Management, Plug and Play Leadership
- Design Consultation Services, Products Speed Delivery of ACPI-Ready Systems
- MobilePRO BIOS Meets PC '97 Requirements, Available Today
NATICK, Mass., March 10, 1997 - SystemSoft Corp. (NASDAQ: SYSF) today announced the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Technology Enabling Program, which allows mobile and desktop PC manufacturers to quickly and easily obtain ACPI compliance and reduce their time-to-market requirements for systems based on this new specification. This program provides PC manufacturers with system design and compatibility services, as well as enabling firmware products that will allow the shortest time to market for an "ACPI Ready" PC design.
Released last month by an industry working group led by Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp. and Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., ACPI is an open specification designed to bring easy, flexible power management and Plug and Play to servers and desktop and notebook PCs.
ACPI version 1.0 enables PCs to be instantly activated when accessed by a user and to remain available for automated tasks after they are turned off. ACPI enhances power management in PCs by allowing the operating system to centrally coordinate power management activity for systems, devices and buses. The specification also enables PCs to instantly turn on and off peripherals such as CD-ROMs, network cards, hard disk drives and printers. Using ACPI, connected devices will then be able to activate PCs, making it easier for users to perform automated tasks, such as sending or receiving faxes or downloading information from the Internet.
"ACPI is a significant step forward by the PC industry to improve power management and Plug and Play and make PCs operate more like consumer electronic devices," said Jonathan Joseph, senior vice president, platform products, SystemSoft Corp. "However, PC manufacturers face tremendous pressure to modify their system designs to adhere to this specification and meet the PC '97 Hardware Design Guide requirements for ACPI-ready systems. SystemSoft, through its ACPI Technology Enabling Program, eliminates many of these engineering and design challenges and will help speed the delivery and adoption of ACPI-ready systems."
Components of this program include:
- ACPI System Design Services – SystemSoft's System Design Services allow OEMs to utilize SystemSoft's system-level ACPI expertise early in the design stage. Through analysis of the schematics, the base machine description can be documented and delivered. The design review helps OEMs identify problems during initial phases when they can be more easily corrected, thereby greatly reducing the development time for an ACPI-Ready design.
- SystemSoft ACPI Firmware Kernel – The SystemSoft ACPI Firmware Kernel provides an OEM with fully compliant ACPI 1.0 support for their base machine (chipset/motherboard). SystemSoft's Firmware Kernel can be plugged directly into a design, eliminating the OEMs' need to develop the firmware themselves. SystemSoft's ACPI Firmware Kernel has a small memory footprint, is easily integrated and provides scaleable ACPI functionality.
- SystemSoft ASL Libraries – SystemSoft's ASL libraries provide OEMs access to SystemSoft's code libraries for system description and device objects (system board peripheral components). Similar to SystemSoft's ACPI Firmware Kernel, the ASL libraries eliminate the need to develop ASL code for system components. SystemSoft's ASL libraries have also passed the latest hardware compatibility testing (HCTs) and, are therefore, ACPI-compliant and "ready" to be plugged into an OEM's design.
- SystemSoft Compatibility Services – which ensure that the ACPI firmware is functional in the latest Windows 9x, Windows NT and other ACPI compatible operating systems. Typical compatibility services include the execution of the latest ACPI-specific HCT and ACPI-compliant operating systems, as well as certification assistance in Plug and Play and power management through debug support. These services also ensure firmware compliance with Microsoft's "Designed for Windows" logo requirements.
SystemSoft is working with all chipset and peripheral manufacturers, including Intel, National Semiconductor and OPTi to ensure ACPI compliance in hardware and system firmware. In addition, SystemSoft has worked closely with Microsoft on the development and testing of the SystemSoft ACPI firmware.
"SystemSoft not only provided feedback and input to the ACPI specification, but they were among the first to provide Microsoft with ACPI firmware, which we're using in the development of our ACPI OS support," said Mike Flora, Hardware Technical Evangelist, Microsoft. "ACPI is the foundation of the Microsoft® OnNow power management initiative."
More information about OnNow power management and device and bus specifications will be available at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 97 (http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/winhec.htm).
MobilePRO Delivers ACPI Compliance Today
SystemSoft also announced immediate availability of its enhanced MobilePRO BIOS, which provides both "legacy" or today's BIOS and Power Management support and tomorrow's complete ACPI compliance while providing backward compatibility. MobilePRO supports the PC 97 requirements for advanced power management and Plug and Play, allowing mobile and desktop OEMs to add real-time clock alarms, sleep state, system control interrupt and status and description tables for system board devices to their systems. These features will allow SystemSoft's OEM customers to deliver increased power management capabilities, providing end-users with systems that perform like consumer electronics devices.
